Why did Twitter choose AWS – Amazon Web Services as their cloud provider?

First things first, we’re talking about a 2 year-long contract signed between both companies, Twitter and AWS. Twitter will leverage the power of AWS’s public cloud infrastructure in order to deliver the millions of tweets per day on the platform.

But why? Simple: it’s an effort to scale in 2021.
The digital age is well and truly on its way, meaning that the top social media platforms need to keep up with it. That means investing in the future, using the best technology available. So Twitter chooses AWS, to help them execute their plans for 2021.

And it’s logical for Twitter to sign this deal with AWS, instead of Azure or Google Cloud Platform for example.
You see, it’s not the first collaboration between both parties. In the past Twitter has already relied on the power of AWS for storage, computing and databases. Next to that, they’ve also relied on AWS for content delivery services in order to support the distribution of images, videos, ads and more on their platform.

So while it’s the first time Twitter has chosen to utilize the agility, speed & security of the public cloud, the deal itself can be seen as an extension of a decades long partnership between both parties.

What is the plan for Twitter and AWS in 2021?

In 2021 Twitter and AWS will work together to create an architecture that extends the social media’s platform on-premises infrastructure. This is done in order to enable them to run and scale the real-time service globally. The goal? Increase reliability and push new features into production around the world.

Among others, Twitter will be using AWS Graviton2-based instances on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) to power its cloud-based workloads. Next to that, they’ll also be leveraging AWS container services to develop and deploy new features and applications consistently across its hybrid infrastructure.

But it doesn’t end there!

Twitter will still continue to use AWS services such as Amazon CloudFront and Amazon DynamoDB. For those of you who aren’t familiar with these mentioned services, allow us to give you a short summary:

      • Amazon CloudFront: AWS’s fast content delivery network service that securely delivers data, videos, applications, and APIs. Benefits? Low latency and high transfer speeds to customers globally.
      • Amazon DynamoDB: AWS’s key-value database that delivers single-digit millisecond performance at any scale.

By using AWS container services to create a seamless hybrid on-premises and cloud environment, Twitter can innovate and deliver new experiences quickly and cost-effectively.

And Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer, Parag Agrawal, expressed the following:

We are excited to work with AWS to expand the infrastructure Twitter uses to serve the public conversation as we grow globally. The collaboration with AWS will improve performance for people who use Twitter by enabling us to serve Tweets from datacentres closer to our customers at the same time as we leverage the Arm-based architecture of AWS Graviton2 instances.

In addition to helping us scale our infrastructure, this work with AWS enables us to ship features faster as we apply AWS’s diverse and growing portfolio of services.
